Our Approach
Skills for School use an acquisitional approach to handwriting intervention in line with current best practice for supporting handwriting development. This approach supports handwriting with instructional guidance, practice, repetition, feedback and reinforcement.
In line with current research for optimal effectiveness, handwriting instruction should have regular opportunity for practice, with regular sessions at 2 sessions per week for at least 20 sessions.
Handwriting assessment at Skills for School utilises a ‘top-down’ approach, including the output of handwriting under different conditions (home and school settings) and from multiple perspectives (child, parent, teacher) to review aspects of handwriting performance and related abilities (e.g. learning and cognitive capacity, attention, and motivation) along with complementary standardised assessments.
The Cognitive Orientation to Occupational Performance (CO-OP) is one approach used at Skills for School to provide specific and effective intervention aimed at improving handwriting for children of primary school age. CO-OP is evidence based, goal-centred and is able to support your child’s handwriting effectively.
